The Salk Institute received a commitment for $10 million in matching funds from Irwin and Joan Jacobs to support 10 endowed chairs for senior scientists. The leadership challenge will add a $1 million match to each of 10 $2 million gifts. The challenge will last until 10 chairs are funded or no later than Dec. 31, 2009.

St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center has won the 10News and Oprah’s Big Give challenge. Five organizations were challenged to raise a minimum of $10,000 to be eligible for a matching $10,000 from 10News. The center won with more than 12,000 votes. The funds will be used to help with an organic garden, aquatic center and building facilities.

Scripps Mercy Hospital held its 38th annual Mercy Ball on April 12 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel. The event raised $1 million, which will benefit critical care services at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego and Chula Vista. Conrad Prebys was a major sponsor with a $500,000 challenge grant. Other sponsors included the Cord Blood Registry, Reno Contracting Inc., Bergelectric Corp. and Rossin Steel Inc.

The Moores UC San Diego Cancer Center held its 27th annual Celebrity Chefs Cook Gala on April 12 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel. The $720,500 raised will benefit cancer patients. Carol Vassiliadis provided a $100,000 match during the live auction, which contributed to the $330,000 total. Donald and Darlene Shiley were among the sponsors.

The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians donated $250,000 to support Granite Hills High School’s fund-raising campaign for a synthetic turf field. The tribe’s donation completes the school’s goal of $1.2 million for the project. Viejas Tribal Chairman Bobby Barrett said, “Many Viejas tribal youth have attended Granite Hills High School, so we know what a great asset it has been for the entire community.”

KSDS-FM Jazz 88.3, a broadcast service of San Diego City College, completed its spring membership drive, which netted more than $100,000 in support. The income underwrites programs that bring the arts, jazz and blues to San Diego.
