Frank Mercardante just can’t stay away from the banking business.
The longtime local banker says he’s coming out of retirement a second time, accepting the chief executive’s job at Discovery Bancorp, based in San Marcos with $200 million in assets.
“I like a challenge, like to work and like the industry,” said Mercardante, who recently turned 60 and was technically retired for a few weeks in 2006 after he arranged the sale of Carlsbad-based Southwest Community Bank to Placer Sierra Bancshares, based in Sacramento.
Soon after, Placer’s board pushed out its chief and asked Mercardante to take the job.
Last year, Mercardante engineered the sale of Placer Sierra to Wells Fargo
